NANTICOKE — Nearly 30 people were evacuated from their homes because of a
gas leak at Church and Hanover streets early Thursday.

Nanticoke Fire Chief Bill Ives said the evacuation was precautionary.
He said city workers were fixing a sewer line at the site of the leak
earlier in the day.

“Apparently the ditch caved in and broke a gas line,” said Juneann Greco, a
PG Energy spokeswoman.

“I thought it was my radiator hissing,” said Noreen Buckley of Hanover
Street. “The next thing I knew someone was knocking on the door telling us to
get out.”

Greco said the leak affected service to only one home, at 405 Church St.
She said the gas was shut off by 12:40 a.m. and the line was repaired by 3
a.m.

Evacuated residents were back in their homes about 1 a.m., said Ives. He
said several people went to stay with relatives and others were taken to Park
Towers on Green Street.
