WELGOSH, HUTCHINGS WIN GOLD: Jeffrey Welgosh and Kelly Hutchings, of the
   
Allied Services John Heinz Institute athletic team, recently won gold
medals at the National Junior Wheelchair Championships in Mesa, ArizWelgosh,
11, of Wilkes-Barre, won the gold medal in singles table tennis, and
Hutchings, a College Misericordia student from LaGrangeville, N.Y., won gold
in the 400-meter backstroke and 50 breaststroke.
    Welgosh also won a silver medal in the shot put, and two bronze medals in
the javelin and discus. He took seventh place in the 800-meter track event and
qualified for the quarter finals of the 200-meter track event.
   
Hutchings finished fourth in the 800-meter track event.
   
Jennifer Maloney, 11, of Wilkes-Barre, won silver in the shot put, placed
fourth in the discus, sixth in the javelin, seventh in the 200-meter track
event and sixth in the 800.
   
FASTEST MAN AT VELODROME FRIDAY: East Penn Bank’s Fastest Man on Wheels
returns to the Lehigh Valley Velodrome on Friday.
   
The top eight male and female point-getters, after a grueling series of
three races, will advance to the keirin final, which determines the fastest
man/woman on wheels. Men will compete in sprints, a tempo race, a miss-and-out
and keirin. The 1996 Fastest Man on Wheels, Marty Nothstein, of Trexlertown,
will be on hand to defend his title.
   
The top women will advance from a five-lap race, a miss-and-out and an
18-lap points race.
   
Another local cyclist, Nicole Reinhart, of Macungie, will also race Friday
in preparation for the World Cup races, in Australia.
   
And a men’s 10-mile record attempt will once again be contested. The
seven-year old track record is held by New Zealand’s Gary Anderson. His time
of 19:02.94 has been in the Lehigh Valley Velodrome record books since 1990.
   
Races begin at 7:30 p.m. The velodrome is located at the intersection of
Routes 100 and 222, in Trexlertown.
