June 21, 1998
    Irene E. Very, 76, of West Scranton, formerly of Wharton, N.J., died Sunday
at the Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.
   
Born in Scranton, May 21, 1922, she was the daughter of Anna Solanik
Shevchuk, Scranton, and the late Michael Shevchuk.
   
She graduated from Brooklyn High School, Brooklyn, Pa., and then went on to
extensive training at Western Union, Philadelphia.
   
She resided in Wharton, N.J., until 1990, when she returned to Scranton.
   
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Silver Burdett Publishing Co.,
Morristown, N.J., as a proofreader.
   
She was a member of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Scranton.
   
She was past state madam president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles from
Aerie 1311, Morristown, N.J., and past madam president of Fraternal Order of
Eagles Aerie 1311, Morristown, N.J. She was a member of American Legion
Auxiliary, Morristown, N.J., Fraternal Order of Police and the Greater
Pittston Lioness Club, where she was also incoming treasurer and the recipient
of Lioness of the Year Award, 1997-1998.
   
Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter Sharon Lee Monahan,
Scranton; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph
Shevchuk Sr., Hop Bottom.
   
Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Thursday at the Semian Funeral Home, 704
Union St., Taylor, with a blessing service by the Very Reverend Nestor Kowal.
