SHAVERTOWN — An 18-hole shootout among 72 golfers at Huntsville Golf Club on May 8 will offer an opportunity for a select few to continue toward spots to play in this year’s U.S. Open.

A field of 43 amateurs and 29 professionals will tee it up for one of four spots to advance out of the local qualifier to one of the 36-hole sectionals held around the country at 10 sites. Last year, 20 qualifiers moved on to play in the U.S. Open Championship at Merion Golf Club.

Huntsville is one of 111 local qualifying sites in the U.S. Players advancing out of local qualifying will take part in sectionals June 2.

The 7,200-yard long par-72 Huntsville course was designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1995 and has hosted the Pennsylvania Senior Better Ball Championship, Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur Championship and the Pennsylvania Senior Amateur Championship.

The U.S. Open will be played June 12-15 at the famed Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The USGA accepted 10,127 entries, a record number, for this year’s Open. Among the entries are 51 players, including 12 past champions, who are currently fully exempt into the field.

Ken Venturi in 1964 and Orville Moody in 1969 both went from a local qualifier all the way to U.S. Open champion.

Play starts at 8:30 a.m. and is open to spectators.
