HANOVER TWP. — Saturday afternoon’s quarterfinal round of The McCarthy at Wyoming Valley Country Club produced limited drama.

Friday’s top three qualifiers made sure of that.

The top four seeds made it through two rounds of match play Saturday with only the match involving fourth-seeded John Olszewski and Eric Williams making it beyond 15.

Defending champions Marty Behm and Todd Vonderheid did not reach the 16th tee all day while advancing into a Sunday morning semifinal against Joe Weiscarger-John Gershey.

Ken Ralston-Brandon Matthews, medalists in Friday’s qualifier with a 61, will meet Olszewski-Williams in the other match to determine Sunday afternoon’s finalists.

Vonderheid described his relationship with Behm as “friends for decades and basically stepbrothers.”

They play together often and have formed a winning combination the last two years at Wyoming Valley by merging two different styles.

“I am Zach Johnson; he is Dustin Johnson,” Behm said in comparing their games to the steady and more aggressive PGA Tour pros.

Behm’s game produced plenty of excitement Saturday. He had six birdies in 13 holes during a 6 and 5 opening-round win over Charles Rado-Peter Paul Olszewski.

The defending champs recovered from losing the first hole to go up 3 at the turn in the quarterfinals. Mike Kostelansky-Mariano Medico cut the lead to two on Medico’s birdie at 10, but Behm holed out from the left bunker for a birdie on 12 to restore the advantage on the way to a 4-and-3 victory.

Weiscarger-Gershey defeated Scott Henry-Scott Barth, 3 and 2, before winning their quarterfinal over Dave Kucharak-Matt Kucharak, 4 and 2.

The Weiscarger-Gershey team, which won a pair of three-day member-guests at the Country Club of Scranton in the late 1990s, made the turn in the quarterfinals ahead by two. Gershey left himself about three feet for birdie at 10 before Weiscarger topped him, coming within inches of an eagle as they built the lead.

Matt Kucharak’s recovery from a fairway bunker on 12 cut into the deficit one time, but Weiscarger-Gershey pulled away again for the win.

“Joe was as steady as he always is,” Gershey said.

Ralston-Matthews followed up Friday’s 28 on the back nine by stopping Joe Werner-Chase Makowski, 4 and 2, then beating John Leighton-Scott Majikes, 5 and 4, in the quarterfinals.

The medalists needed just five holes to go up 3 in the quarterfinals. Matthews, whose distance off the tee was a big factor in the first round, nearly drove the par-4 fourth to add a birdie to the one he had on the opening hole. And, when Matthews found trouble by losing his tee shot on 3, Ralston made a 20-foot putt for a sand save to keep the team ahead.

The lead reached four with both on the green for conceded birdies at 13 and the match ended when they halved the next hole.

The opening round produced just two wins by lower seeds one of those was a 9 vs. 8 victory by Leighton-Majikes over Jim Scorey-Pete Johnson.

The other was 12th-seeded Rick Berry-Tom Biscotti who won 1-up over Jeff Lewis-Mike Zapotoski.

Berry-Biscotti tried to break up the top-four semifinal pairing when they rallied into the lead briefly on the back nine before Olszewski-Williams used pars at 17 and 18 to pull out a 2-up victory.

NOTES: According to Pete Borda, the Wyoming Valley Country Club does not release par scores during match play.
