WILKES-BARRE — A 52-year-old woman was listed in critical condition
Tuesday afternoon at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after city firefighters
rescued her from a fire at a boarding house Monday night.
Firefighters found Betty Taylor unconscious on the floor next to a burning
bed in her room in a boarding house at 164 Wyoming St.
Captain Donald Wittkopp of the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department said he
believes Taylor was smoking in bed and fell asleep, although he said he hasn’t
interviewed the woman yet.
Firefighters contained the blaze to Taylor’s room on the first floor of the
building. Wittkopp said damage to the room was limited to the bed, mattress
and wood paneling. The building suffered smoke and water damage.
Taylor sustained second-degree burns, Wittkopp said.
No one else was injured in the blaze.
