WILKES-BARRE – It’s well known that anything can happen in doubles play.

That unpredictability yielded a pair of unlikely district semifinalists as two surprising Wyoming Valley Conference doubles pairs recorded quarterfinal wins Tuesday in the first day of the District 2 Girls Tennis Doubles Championships at Kirby Park.

Unranked Grace Schaub and Kajal Patel, of Dallas, took down a pair of seeded opponents to find themselves in today’s semifinal. An hour later, Coughlin’s Dana Schneider and Alia Sod – the seventh seed – took down the second-seeded duo to earn their place in the final four.

The Mountaineer and Crusader pairs were joined by Wyoming Seminary’s Jacqui Meuser and Madison Nardone as the WVC’s representatives in the last day of competition. Semifinals begin at 1 p.m. today at Kirby Park.

Schneider and Sod were the last ones standing in a three-set 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Abington Heights’ Cierra Beck and Caroline Mattise – one of the favorites to win the district crown.

“I never even thought we would have made it,” Sod said. “It’s fantastic.”

In the third set, the Crusader and Comet pairs found themselves with a 5-5 stalemate after trading games. Mattise struggled with her serves, giving way to a love-40 Coughlin lead. Abington Heights managed to rebound with two successful shots. The front-side Schneider redirected a Mattise shot to allow the Crusaders to steal a game.

On the Crusaders’ ensuing serves, Abington Heights quickly jumped to a love-30 lead. Coughlin went on a string of four-straight points to send Schneider and Sod into tears of excitement at midcourt.

“We saw their placement,” Schneider said. “We kept our heads in the game and didn’t focus on anything else besides that ball.”

Schneider and Sod will face third-seeded Sara Donley and Erin Engle, of Jersey Shore, in the District 2-4 Class 3A semi.

Schaub and Patel had an improbable run, but did not need a third set in each of their three rounds to make today’s competition. The unseeded duo took down Wyoming Seminary’s Alex Cuddy and Megan Obeid – Class 2A’s No. 4 seed – by a 6-0, 6-4 score in the second round. They then took care of the fifth-seeded Holy Redeemer team of Megan McGraw and Emily Kabalka by a 6-1, 6-3 mark.

“Communication was big,” Schaub said. “We started off pretty focused, and that’s what we needed to do.”

Schaub and Patel will face top-ranked Emily Jonsson and Grace Reilly, of Scranton Prep, in the semifinal.

Meuser and Nardone did not face a sweat in their first three rounds, allowing a total of five games throughout the course of the day. They will face No. 6 Emilia Jakubek and Tatiana Klacko, of Scranton Prep, in the semis.

With the third, fourth and fifth seeds out of the 2A tournament and the No. 2 team out of the 3A bracket, Wyoming Seminary coach Alison Joanlanne dismissed the notion of seeds and the likelihood of more upsets in the making.

“It doesn’t surprise me (that there were upsets),” she said. “I don’t know how they even get the basis for their seeds in the first place.”
