WILKES-BARRE — Lake-Lehman’s move up to a new division got off to a rough start on Tuesday. But only for a few innings.

The Black Knights shrugged off an early five-run deficit to beat defending district champion Holy Redeemer 8-5 on opening day of the WVC baseball season at Hollenback Park.

Freshman Tyler Long pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win as the Knights (1-0) scored eight runs in the final four innings.

Cody Paraschak had two singles and an RBI for Lake-Lehman, which won its first game in the newly formed Division 2.

Jim Strickland helped Redeemer (0-1) jump out to a 5-0 lead after two innings with a triple and two RBI. But the Royals, replacing the majority of their lineup from last year’s Class 2A title team, struggled in the field as four of the eight runs were unearned.

MMI Prep 10, Columbia-Montour VT 2

The Preppers enter WVC play with a road win in a non-conference game.

Casey McCoy had three hits while Joe Yamulla (two RBI) and Jared Dasher (RBI) each had two.

Aaron Kollar allowed only two hits in five innings for the win on the mound.

Two games postponed

The cold weather delayed the start of the WVC season for a handful of teams on Tuesday.

Coughlin at Hazleton Area will now be played today, with the venue likely being changed to Coughlin’s Hilldale Park. A final decision will be made early today.

Crestwood at Pittston Area has been moved to Saturday, with the time to be determined.
