BERWICK — Wyoming Valley West is continuing its tear. Berwick will have to wait another day to try and clinch a division title.


The Spartans burst things open on Tuesday with five runs in the fifth inning to earn a 6-3 win over the first-place Bulldogs. It was the eighth win in the last 10 WVC games for Valley West (8-5), which pulled within two games of Berwick (10-3) for the Division 1 lead.


Hazleton Area is tied with the Spartans for second at 8-5. All three teams have two league games remaining.


Evan McCue stayed hot for the Spartans with a double and three RBI. Nick Hogan went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Dan Flaherty earned the win with Billy Gregory picking up the save.


Kyle Miller had two hits with a double and an RBI for Berwick.

The Mountaineers made the final week of the Division 2 race interesting by earning a season sweep of first-place Tunkhannock.


The Tigers (8-3) lead Dallas (7-4) and Wyoming Area (7-4) by one game with each team down to three league games left to play.


Brian Stepniak went the distance for the win, striking out eight. He also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and two RBI. Ryan Zapoticky added three hits of his own.


Cody Brown had two hits for Tunkhannock.
