WEST PITTSTON — A year ago, Joe Champi wasn’t even on Pittston Area’s roster. On Monday, he received a big honking trophy from Andy Ashby and is already an early MVP candidate in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

The Patriots senior reached base in all four plate appearances and was named the top player in the annual Ashby game against Wyoming Area. Pittston Area held off a few late charges by the rival Warriors for a 5-3 victory at Atlas Field.

For his efforts, Champi was presented with a trophy by Ashby, the former Major League and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons pitcher, who lives in the area.

“What can you say about him? He went from not playing to being one of the top players in the league,” Pittston Area coach Paul Zaffuto said. “If people don’t know about him by now, they better start knowing about him.

“As far as being a good person and a good teammate, he’s everything you could ask for — on top of being one of the better players in the league.”

Champi had stopped playing a few years ago but elected to come out for the Patriots for his final year of high school. The decision has been extremely beneficial for both the player and the program.

Batting third and playing first base, Champi is hitting north of .700 through six league games, leading the WVC in hits and RBI with two homers for good measure.

On Monday he was part of an impressive showing from the Patriots 1-4 hitters — Josh Razvillas, Tyler McGarry, Champi and Michael Schwab — who all had multiple hits.

Designated hitter Kyle Turonis also came through with a clutch RBI single with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. Kyle O’Fier followed it up by driving in another run on a groundout, pushing the Patriots (4-2 WVC) to a 5-1 lead.

They’d need it.

The Warriors (3-3) put at least two runners on in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, but Patriots pitchers John Faggotti (win), Michael Schwab and Justin Glasgow (save) allowed just one earned run in that stretch.

Wyoming Area’s best chance came with the bases loaded with one out in the sixth. A hard grounder to the left side was expertly gobbled up by shortstop Pat McGinty, who got the out at second and just missed a double play on the relay to first.

“That ball gets through, and it’s a different game,” Warriors coach Dean Carey said. “He made a hell of a play there.”

A run scored on the play, but Schwab retired the next batter to get out of the jam with a 5-2 lead.

Joe Gavenonis (3-for-4, two RBI) knocked in a run in the seventh to make it a two-run game, but Glasgow shut the door for the save. Corey Lescavage also had two hits for the Warriors.

Despite a bobbled grounder to lead off the ninth, the Patriots largely cleaned up their defense after committing four errors in a loss to fellow Division 1 contender Berwick last week that spoiled a no-hitter by Schwab.

With the pitching improving and Champi leading a revitalized lineup, the Patriots are looking to make another deep run into the postseason.

“Just keep smiling, keep having a good time,” Zaffuto said. “And hopefully things are going to keep rolling the way that they are.”

NOTES: The Patriots were wearing their black and silver jerseys with camo sleeves in support of the Wounded Warrior Project. The program has been taking up donations for the foundation at home games this season.
