BERWICK — Seven runs on two hits. Four runs on zero hits. All season long, Berwick has found ways to win baseball games, no matter the situation.

“Offense is like the temperature — it’s up and down,” Berwick coach Brian Pinterich said. “But defense and pitching, it has to be like water — you need it for survival. That’s how we do it.”

On Wednesday, that formula equaled not just another victory, but a move up to first place in Division 1 of the Wyoming Valley Conference.

Facing Hazleton Area and fireballer Sal Biasi, the Bulldogs scrapped together four singles, scored four runs and held off the Cougars for a huge 4-2 win at North Berwick Field.

Now at 10-3 in WVC play, the Dawgs are a half-game up on the Cougars (9-3), who have a game in hand. Berwick closes out against Coughlin and Wyoming Valley West while Hazleton Area must play Lake-Lehman, Pittston Area and Coughlin.

Sophomore right-hander Jordan DiValerio was terrific on the mound, tossing a complete-game three-hitter against a potent Hazleton Area lineup. And when they Dawgs needed it most, senior Anthony Melito came through with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to put his team on top for good.

DiValerio had started against the Cougars last month in a 6-0 loss. He said that experience paid off this time around.

“My fastball wasn’t working as good as it usually does, so I was just trying to keep them off-balance,” DiValerio said. “They weren’t expecting (so many breaking pitches) because they’d seen me before and knew I just tried to overpower people with my fastball.”

On the other side, Biasi was just as strong on the mound, going the distance while giving up only four hits.

“Sal’s a stud,” Pinterich said. “We knew we were going to have limited chances, and when we had those chances, we had to take advantage of them.”

The Dawgs did exactly that. They pushed a run across on a two-out throwing error in the third. Melito’s clutch hit came in the fifth, one batter after Alex Klinger was awarded first on a catcher’s interference call with the count at 0-2.

“The catcher’s interference hurt,” Cougars coach Gino Cara said. “That happens. It’s part of the game. But that was a momemtum-changer. Without a doubt.”

That loaded the bases for Melito, one of two everyday starters back from last year’s talented squad. Biasi battled back from a three-ball count to run it full before Melito slapped one back up the middle. The drive had eyes for the outfield, scoring Zach Kyttle and Jake Jones for a 3-2 lead.

Fellow senior Jorden Stout added some insurance in the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to left to score Klinger.

“They got some timely hitting, and we didn’t,” Cara said. “You’re not going to win a lot of games with three hits.

“Berwick, they played great ball today.”

The Cougars opened up a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by Joe Baran and went back in front 2-1 in the fourth when a Kyle Rogers sac fly brought home Robbie John, who had led off with a double.

Hazleton Area was without dynamic sophomore Dante Biasi, who had to leave Tuesday’s win over Crestwood with an injury. Junior standout Joe Baran has been battling a wrist injury and was only penciled into the batting order after getting to the field Wednesday and taking some swings.

“I told Gino that this doesn’t change anything — that’s still the best team in the state of Pennsylvania in Quad-A, there’s no question about it,” Pinterich said. “We stepped up. We played a great game.

“We’ve been playing well all year defensively and our pitching has been lights out, and our timely hitting has come through. That’s what we’re built on, and that was our game today.”

NOTES: In a very rare event, WQMY-TV broadcast the game live from Berwick. To put that in perspective, the Dawgs’ 2008 state championship victory appeared only on tape delay. … The Cougars are in the midst of six games in a stretch of six days.
