HAZLETON — The mighty Crestwood Comets went to Hazleton looking to avenge its only league loss this season while trying to celebrate a division championship.

Mackenzie Yori crashed their party.

Yori scored a career-high 40 points Monday and Hazleton Area prevented Crestwood from clinching the Wyoming Valley Conference Division I title by crushing the Comets, 83-63 on Senior Night at Hazleton Area High School.

“We didn’t want them to take it down in our home,” Yori said. “This is our gym. Let them go take it down in another gym.

“Not here.”

In all likelihood, Crestwood - which fell to 11-2 (with both losses to Hazleton Area) in Division I and 16-4 overall - will claim its crown Thursday at Tunkhannock, which goes into the regular season finale still searching for its first win in Division I.

“That’s a championship team,” Hazleton Area coach Joe Gavio said. “They’re going to beat Tunkhannock. They’re a great team. But coming in here, we just had a little spunk to us. We didn’t want them to win it here.”

For one more night, at least, Hazleton Area stayed in the Division I hunt - along with Pittston Area as both teams are a game behind Crestwood at 10-3 in the division.

All because of one special night by Yori.

The sharp-shooting sophomore drilled seven 3-point field goals while putting on an unstoppable performance from behind the arc. When Crestwood did prevent one of those deep balls from going in - with a foul in the third period - Yori simply stepped to the foul line and swished three straight free throws.

“Wow, wow, wow!” Gavio exclaimed. “She’s really improved, she has that little jump-shot that’s hard to stop. I told her one of these times she’s going to have a big game. What a night for it.”

Yori was lights-out from the start, popping a pair of 3-pointers while scoring 10 points in the first quarter to get the Cougars out to a 19-16 lead.

“I was feeling it before the game,” Yori said. “I just stayed focused. And my teammates got me the ball.”

She just kept putting it in the basket.

Yori popped 16 points in the third quarter, outscoring Crestwood by herself and helping Hazleton Area’s three-point halftime lead grow to 20 points with a quarter to play.

Her trey midway through the third quarter gave Crestwood a 16-point lead; her third 3-pointer of the second half put the Cougars up by 21 points; and her three free throws after she was fouled on a 3-point attempt that nearly fell gave Hazleton Area it’s biggest advantage, 61-37.

“A lot of her baskets were at big times for us,” Gavio said.

Crestwood had no answer.

The Comets leaned on Maddie Ritsick, who started her 26-point game by scoring the team’s first nine. But the Comets were disrupted by Hazleton Area’s harassing press defense, and even 19 points from light-scoring Maury Cronauer and 10 more from Rebecca Rutkowski didn’t help much.

By the time they found a bit of a groove, it was too late.

Hazleton Area zipped up and down the floor, and when Yori wasn’t scoring at will, her teammates were.

Alyssa Sitch hit her usual 20 points, starting with 10 in the second quarter to give the Cougars some breathing room with a 28-20 lead, and Lexi Wolk finished with 10 points.

“I feel like we just stayed together as a team,” Yori said. “We were everywhere on the court. We just did everything we needed to just get the ball, and executed.

“This is a great team win.”
