POTTSVILLE — After last year’s disappointing loss in the PIAA second round — a game coach Chris Parker will tell you they should have won — Holy Redeemer made no mistake about their weekend plans this time around.

The Royals were dominant in all phases of the game, blasting Fleetwood 54-39 in the second round of the PIAA Class 3A girls basketball tournament.

“I told them at halftime that, motivation and effort-wise, that was the best first half they’ve played all season,” Parker said. “One of our main focus points was that loss last year. This team has shown a maturity with the experience they’ve gained. They believe in themselves.”

The game was not as close as the final score indicates. The Royals (22-5) scored 11 consecutive points in the first quarter to open a 15-4 lead and never looked back. The lead reached 49-23 in the final minute of the third quarter after an Alexis Lewis steal and breakaway for Holy Redeemer.

“This was a really big win for us,” Royals sophomore Rebecca Prociak said. “The past few games, we’ve really had some slow starts. Coach wanted us to come out strong.”

The Royals will play West Perry on Saturday in the state quarterfinals. West Perry (22-5), the District 3 champions, advanced with a 51-35 victory over Abington Heights in the first game at the Martz Center on Wednesday night.

How dominant was Holy Redeemer on Wednesday?

Eighteen minutes in, Lewis had nearly as many rebounds (14) as the Tigers had points (16). The junior simply could not be stopped, shooting over double teams and driving through triple teams. She finished with 27 points, 19 rebounds and seven steals.

The Tigers (24-6) didn’t have an answer for Alyssa Platko, who sparked the first-quarter run with six straight points. She had 10 in the half and 15 in the game.

Point guard Lydia Lawson had seven assists and despite giving up size, played strong defense. At one point, she used her crossover dribble to send one Fleetwood defender sprawling nearly into the bench.

It only continued throughout the Royals lineup. Julie Kosik (six rebounds) and Kayla Hons both sank threes. Mehgan Corridoni played key minutes. And Rebecca Prociak shut down Fleetwood’s top scorer, Cyre Virgo, who had one field goal in the first half and just four points at the break.

“We didn’t give up one offensive rebound in the first half,” Parker said. “That allowed us to get out in transition and get some easy buckets.”

Redeemer held Fleetwood to 31 percent shooting in the first half on just 16 shots, and enjoyed a 10-2 advantage in turnovers at the break. As the teams entered the fourth quarter, the Royals had a 36-20 edge on the glass despite a slight size advantage for Fleetwood.
