NANTICOKE — Austin Mazonkey came out of the 30-minute lightning delay and immediately bolted 63 yards for the end zone on the first play from possession.

Mazonkey racked up 184 yards on 19 carries in just one half of work to lead Northwest to a 59-21 victory over Nanticoke in a three-plus hour game, halted twice by lightning delays. Both lightning delays came in a second quarter that took 1 hour, 45 minutes to finish.

“We played four quarters of football for the first time in six years,” Northwest coach Carl Majer said. “Sometimes you need a loss like we had to Hanover last week to give you a real kick in the butt. Today, we played like the kind of team we’re capable of playing.”

Northwest’s Nick Long had a tremendous day at the receiving slot. Long caught five passes for 177 yards with two touchdowns. He made a dazzling finger-tip catch on a long Austin Mazonkey pass for 39 yards in the second quarter.

The Rangers had things go their way early on in the first quarter as Nanticoke was driving near the midfield. Eric Gurzynski picked off a screen pass and took it 49 yards to give Northwest a 14-0 lead.

Nanticoke responded after Mazonkey’s run and the second delay with a sky-high pass from Joe Levandowski to Pat Hemple for the Trojans first score to make it a 21-7 game in the second quarter.

Tyler Burger scored two touchdowns with 72 rushing yards on 12 carries. Northwest kicker Jeremy Walsh overcame two early missed extra point opportunities with a booming 32-yard field goal to enable the mercy rule at 44-7 with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter.
