All-Time Series: Never played
The Coaches: Berwick’s George Curry (437-92-5, 44th year); Wood’s Steve Devlin (82-16, 7th year)
About Berwick: The Dawgs are attempting to make the state championship game for the first time since 1997, when they won their record sixth title. They last appeared in the semifinals in 2004, losing 16-13 Manheim Central. They are 7-3 in state semifinals games, with the other losses coming to Bethlehem Catholic 7-3 in 1990 and 13-8 to Allentown Central Catholic in 1993.
Berwick is the only District 2 team to play in a Class 3A state semifinal. Only two other Wyoming Valley Conference programs have played in state semifinal games — Hanover Area in Class 2A in 1990 and 1991, and Dallas in Class 2A in 1993.
Berwick played its first football game in 1888, yet this is the second consecutive week it will play an opponent that it has never faced before.
About Wood: Wood has played in the 3A state semifinal every year since the Philadelphia Catholic League joined the PIAA in 2008. The Vikings have advanced to the state title game three times, winning the championship in 2011 and losing in 2008 and 2012.
Wood has won 11 or more games every year Devlin has been running the program, except for his first season in 2007, when the Vikings finished 9-3. Their last losing record came in 2002, when they finished 3-8. Devlin’s 82 career victories are the most at the school, which played its first game in 1966.
Wood has won six consecutive PCL and D12-3A championships.
