CARBONDALE — A Carbondale police officer is accused of trying to bribe a
fellow officer to drop a drunken driving charge.
   
Special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pennsylvania
State Police arrested officer Joseph Parise, 37, at the Carbondale police
headquarters Wednesday morning.
    According to an FBI press release, Parise is charged with a violation of
the Hobbs Act, by attempting to bribe another officer to have a drunken
driving charge dropped for a local citizen.
   
If convicted, Parise could face up to 20 years imprisonment and fines up to
$10,000.
   
Thefts from city vehicles rises
   
WILKES-BARRE — Due to an increase in thefts from vehicles in past weeks,
the Wilkes-Barre Police Department is advising citizens to take preventative
measures.
   
Always lock your doors.
   
Roll windows up tight.
   
Park in heavily traveled areas.
   
Do not leave valuables in sight. Lock them in the trunk or take them with
you.
   
Police investigate burglaries
   
PLAINS TWP. — Township police are seeking information about the following
burglary incidents that occurred early Wednesday:
   
Mountain Beverage, South River Street. Thieves stole cigarettes and NASCAR
shirts and ransacked offices.
   
Pizza II East, East Carey Street. An undetermined amount of money was taken
from amusement machines. About $38 worth of pizza was carried off, and beer
taps were left open to drain onto the floor.
   
Jay-Dee Department Store, East Carey Street. A storage room was ransacked.
   
East Side Auto, South Main Street. A rear window was smashed in an apparent
burglary attempt.
   
Officers Joe Wilk and Paul Sabol cq both names are investigating. Anyone
with information is asked to call Plains Township police at 829-3431. cq
