YATESVILLE – Troy Yashinski was in position to get more offensive chances Friday night.
The Wyoming Valley West senior did not wait for those extra touches to start making an impact.
Yashinski returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to start the Spartans on their way to a 54-6 rout of host Pittston Area.
With leading rusher Eric Acosta sidelined, Yashinski, also a starting cornerback, took over as the main ballcarrier early and finished with three touchdowns. Jordan Mason, who starts at outside linebacker, took his turn and ran for two scores. Shawn Judge stepped in and ran for another score before halftime.
“We’re deep at that position,” Wyoming Valley West coach Pat Keating said. “We have a lot of different guys who can carry the load.
“That’s a deep and talented group.”
Yashinski added a 36-yard touchdown run for a 21-0 lead after one quarter. He turned a Michael Baur shovel pass into a 16-yard touchdown and a 40-0 lead with 2:56 remaining in the second quarter.
By halftime, the Spartans had piled up 16 first downs and 412 yards total offense – 229 passing and 183 rushing – to take a 48-6 lead and force the entire second half into the Mercy Rule.
Yashinski took advantage of his extra duty and rushed for 56 yards on six carries.
“We had some great blocking up front and the receivers were making all the catches,” Yashinski said.
One of the usual suspects also was a big part of the offense.
Michael Baur hit eight of 13 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown and carried eight times for 91 yards and a touchdown during a game in which he was done for the night at halftime along with the rest of the starting lineup.
Baur’s touchdown run and Yashinski’s first two scores opened a 21-point lead in the first 8:01.
The lead reached 28-0 in the first minute of the second quarter on the first of two short touchdown runs by Mason.
Pittston Area did not have a first down until James Emmett hit Angelo Aita with a 26-yard pass with two minutes left in the half. Kyle Petrosky went up over a defender to pull in a 40-yard touchdown pass on the next play.
“It was a very good defensive effort,” Keating said. “We played fast, we played physical and we got to the football.”
Judge assured the Mercy Rule with an 11-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion in the final minute of the half.
Ian Moran broke a 40-yard touchdown run with 1:13 left and the Spartans took a knee rather than try to add a conversion.
