One of the most enjoyable things about the summer is barbeques. Whether you enjoy them on your patio with your family or at one of the many local festivals, this summer favorite can’t be beat. Well, if you have room for just one more, and I know that you do, why not take a break from the kitchen next weekend and attend St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church’s annual chicken barbeque dinner?

The parish committee of St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will have a chicken barbeque dinner Saturday, Aug. 28, from 2-6 p.m. at the church, 200 Stephenson St. The menu includes a half chicken, a baked potato, green beans, a roll and butter. Beverages and desserts are extra. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased in advance by calling the rectory office at 457-2291.

Takeouts will be available too. Rev. Carmen Bolock is the pastor, and Byron Wescott is the parish chairman.

Yard Sale Today

Duryea V.F.W. Post 1227 will host an outdoor yard sale today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the post home, 492 Stephenson St., rain or shine. Tables are $15 each. Food and beverages will also be available.

Crime Watch

The Duryea Neighborhood Crime Watch and the Duryea Recreation Board will have a joint meeting Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St.

LL Family Night

The Duryea Little League will have its Family Night Friday, Aug. 27 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Duryea Little League Field, Shaft Street.

All baseball, softball and teener players and their families are invited to attend. If anyone would like to bring a covered dish or dessert, please call Jeanne at 655-0203.

Class of 1962

The Duryea High School class of 1962, which was the school’s final graduating class, will have a reunion planning meeting Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Brennan Regan American Legion Post 585, 329 Main St. All interested classmates are invited to attend. Cotton Club Trip

St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches, Avoca, are sponsoring a bus trip to the internationally famous Cotton Club in New York City and The New York Botanical Garden Saturday, Sept. 18.

The bus will leave St. Mary’s School at 9 a.m. and arrive in the city at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The first stop on this trip is Harlem’s historical Cotton Club. At the club, famous for launching the careers of jazz greats Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and Lena Horne, attendees will feast on a buffet brunch while enjoying the entertainment of the club’s gospel show.

Following lunch, attendees will be bused to The New York Botanical Garden where they will enjoy an hour-long tour through the gardens via a tram. Following the tour, attendees are invited to explore the gardens themselves and enjoy a snack at the garden’s cafe and pick up an item or two in the gift shop.

The bus will leave New York at 6 p.m. and return to Avoca at 8:30 p.m.

The cost is $120 per person.

HR Golf Classic

Holy Rosary School will have its second annual golf classic Sunday, Sept. 19 at Edgewood in the Pines, Drums. Registration is at noon and the shotgun start begins at 1 p.m.

It is a captain and crew format. Singles will be placed on a team. The cost is $100 per player which includes lunch and dinner at the club.

Awards will be given for several golfing contests.

There will also be prizes awarded throughout the day including a high definition flat screen television.

There are also several tournament sponsorship opportunities available at various donation levels which are great vehicles for promoting your business or organization. For more information please contact Debbie Davis at 451-1762.

Tax Reminder

Duryea Tax Collector Martin Hanczyc reminds residents the school tax bills have been mailed. The rebate period ends Monday, Sept. 20. If you elect to pay your bill in installments, please note the first payment is due Tuesday, Aug. 31. If you did not receive a tax bill, please call Hanczyc at 457-2482.

Holiday Market

Holy Rosary School will have a holiday market place craft show Sunday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the school, 125 Stephenson St. They are seeking vendors and crafters. For more information on how you can participate, please call Sharon Chase 457-4450 or Debbie Davis at 451-1762.

Rail Excursion

All aboard! Back by popular demand, the Greater Pittston Charity Steam Ride is planning a railroad excursion to Jim Thorpe Saturday, Oct. 2.

The newly restored Reading & Northern Railroad No. 425 Baldwin Light Pacific Steam Locomotive will depart at 9 a.m. from Weis Market in the Village Shopping Center, Duryea, and return at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Tickets are $75 each. Check should be made payable and sent to the Greater Pittston Charity Steam Ride c/o Pittston Memorial Library, 47 Broad St., Pittston, PA 18640. All proceeds will benefit the Pittston Memorial Library, Greater Pittston YMCA, and the Care and Concern Free Health Clinic. For more information, please call Kelly at 457-6558.

Duryea Bingo

Duryea bingo takes place every Monday at the Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the games begin at 6:30 p.m. There is a guaranteed $1,000 jackpot every week.
