KINGSTON — Holy Redeemer never got that big inning Tuesday, so it settled for several little ones.

The Royals scored in four of their six trips to the plate to defeat Hanover Area 6-1 in a key Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3 softball game.

Redeemer (9-0) went up two games in the loss column to Hanover Area (9-2) and Northwest (7-2). Division 3 teams play 12 WVC games. A divisional title would also help Redeemer regarding seeding for the District 2 Class 2A tournament.

The Royals sandwiched single-run innings in the fourth and fifth between two-run innings in the second and sixth. But there were times they looked primed to bust open with a big inning only to falter.

Baserunning was part of the blame. Redeemer sent four players to the plate in the first inning and had three hits. Yet two baserunning gaffes — one player was doubled off second after a flyout and another picked off first by catcher Haylee Bobos — led to no runs.

Bobos also picked off a runner in the fifth, the same inning where Redeemer had a player thrown out trying to go from first to third on a sacrifice bunt.

“We’re coming off what I think is a seven-game layover from our last game,” Redeemer coach Mark Senchak said. “We were a little rusty. Those baserunning errors, that’s something we’re going to have to work on and clean up before playoffs. Otherwise, overall I’m happy with the performance of my team.”

There was plenty of good for Redeemer on Tuesday. Pitcher Kaya Swanek stayed unbeaten at 6-0, striking out seven and surrendering four hits. Battery mate Chelsea Skrepenak hit a solo homer — her WVC-leading seventh of the season — and picked off a runner at first. And Sydney Kotch added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth by swatting a single to right.

Skrepenak also had a two-run single in the second while Swanek added an RBI single in the fifth.

“Holy Redeemer can hit the ball,” Hanover Area coach Tami Thomas said. “They’re a good team and I respect them for that. We made the plays, then we didn’t make the plays.”

Hanover Area got its lone run in the third when Toni Elick doubled with one out and scored on Emily Rinehimer’s two-out double.
