Matthew Edkins

Lake-Lehman

Junior

Diving

Edkins set a District 2 Class 2A diving record with a score of 483.55, good for his third consecutive district championship. He collected his third state medal with an eighth-place performance at Bucknell, posting a final score of 413.2. Edkins ousted Dallas’ Alaric Eby’s 2004 record by nearly a full point.

Andrew Greenwald

Wyoming Valley West

Senior

Distance

Greenwald’s only states appearance came in the 400 free relay team that took 24th place. He swam a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 free (1:53.88) and 500 free (5:03.72) at districts. Greenwald swam the first leg of the district’s 3A winning 400 free relay that posted a 3:20.48.

Joseph Grzech

Crestwood

Senior

Sprints/Back

Grzech ended his illustrious high school swimming career with two more district championships under his belt. Grzech won the 100 back (54.74) and the 200 free (1:47.72) for his first gold medals since the 100 back in his freshman year. He came in 15th in the 100 backstroke at the state meet, finishing in 54.91 seconds. He came a half-second short of qualifying for the consolation round in the 100 free, coming in 18th place.

Josh Grzech

Crestwood

Senior

Butterfly/Sprints

Grzech broke a 28-year old district record in the 100 butterfly. His 51.73-second mark broke Bishop Hoban grad Michael Morgan’s 1986 mark by 24-hundreths of a second. For the second straight year, he nabbed district golds in the 100 free and 100 butterfly. He collected a pair of PIAA medals in both races. Grzech swam to a 47.41-second finish in the 100 free to earn fifth in the state. He followed that with a sixth-place showing in the 100 butterfly, finishing the course in a brisk 52.41 seconds.

Jason Linden

Tunkhannock

Senior

Relays

Linden’s last-minute substitution into the 200 free relay arguably was a deciding factor in Tunkhannock’s district championship. Originally pegged for the 400 free relay, Linden stepped up and won an upset district title in the 200 free relay (1:32.13). He appeared on the Tigers’ 200 medley relay that collected a state medal with a seventh-place showing. He medaled in the 100 back at districts.

Chris Lukasewski

Crestwood

Senior

Sprints

The Comet won a district championship and made the state consolation finals in the 50 free. Lukasewski swam 22.21 seconds to put him in position to finish in 14th place. After receiving an at-large spot following his third-place (49.12) 100 free district swim, he was the last man out of the consolation finals, missing the cut by just four-hundreths of a second. He won the 50 free at districts by a fingertip over Pittston Area’s Brandon Winters.

Reid Luksic

Dallas

Junior

Breast

Luksic carried Dallas to a WVC South Division championship. He qualified for Lewisburg in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.13 — 3.39 seconds off his seed time — after taking third at districts. Luksic finished 29th in the state race. His 200 free relay finished second at districts.

Patrick Madaya

Dallas

Senior

Diving

Key to the Mountaineers’ conference title was their success on the 1-meter board. Madaya finished second to Lake-Lehman’s Matthew Edkins in 2A diving with a score of 424.65. He finished 12th in the state with a final score of 368.5 and sat seventh after preliminary dives. Madaya also swam on the Mountaineers’ fourth-place 200 medley relay.

Matt Miller

Tunkhannock

Senior

Butterfly/Sprints

Miller appeared on the Tigers’ 200 medley relay team that received state medals with a seventh-place finish. He came in 18th place after qualifying for PIAAs in the 100 butterfly. His 54.91-second time was 22-hundreths of a second short of making the consolation final. He appeared on the 200 free relay team that was 16th at states. His second places in the 100 fly and 100 free helped Tunkhannock win a district championship.

Joe Moffitt

Tunkhannock

Senior

Medley/Breast

Moffitt became a state medalist with his 200 medley team’s seventh-place finish. Individually, he made a PIAA appearance in the 100 breast and came in 24th place. Moffitt also swam on the 200 free relay team that was 16th in the state. To lead the Tigers to a district championship, he claimed second in the 100 breast (1:01.51) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:07.62).

Connor Thole

Holy Redeemer

Sophomore

Medley/Back

If qualifying for states wasn’t enough, Thole improved upon his 100 back seed time by nearly 1.5 seconds to put himself at 20th in the state with a 55.32-second finish. Thole took third in the 200 IM (2:06.97) and fourth in the 100 back (56.95) during an impressive showing at districts.

Terry Vrabec

Coughlin

Junior

Breast

Vrabec was the conference’s biggest shocker at Lewisburg. Seeded 27th overall coming into the 2A 100 breast race, Vrabec slashed 2.69 seconds off his seed time to unexpectedly qualify for finals with a 1:00.74. He claimed his PIAA medal with an eighth-place finish. Even more impressive, Vrabec’s feat came after finishing just fourth (100 breast) and fifth (100 fly) at districts.

Michael Yeninas

Wyoming Valley West

Senior

Breast

Yeninas secured his first individual district championship in the 100 breast, beating Delaware Valley’s Fox Wihlborg by 15-hundreths of a second. He won the district crown with a 1:04.2, along with a second place in the 100 fly. He also swam on the 3A district championship-winning 200 free and 400 free relay teams that took 23rd and 24th place, respectively, at states.
