WILKES-BARRE — City police say they recovered a large amount of marijuana from the driver of a Ford Explorer who sped away and crashed into a parked vehicle on High Street, according to court records.

DeShawn Bobby Wicks, 22, of Spring Street, Wilkes-Barre, was arraigned Tuesday on multiple offenses after he allegedly wrecked his mother’s Ford during a pursuit that ended in a crash at about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

According to the criminal complaint:

Police encountered a Ford Explorer parked in the middle of Moyallen Street blocking traffic for several minutes. A passenger entered the Ford that remained blocking traffic.

An officer pulled up and activated the cruiser’s emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop.

Wicks, who was identified as the driver, pulled into a parking spot along Moyallen Street.

As the officer approached the passenger side window that was rolled down, an overwhelming odor of marijuana was detected.

Wicks told the officer the Ford belonged to his mother and he did not have any of the vehicle’s information. Wick displayed a photo of his driver’s license from his cell phone, the complaint says.

A second officer approached the driver’s side as the passenger exited the Ford.

Wicks allegedly told police he gives rides as a “cash Uber.”

Police in the complaint said Wicks started the Ford and heavily revved the engine before he sped away with the passenger side door open.

Police pursued Wicks who drove at a high rate of speed on Moyallen Street and failed to obey a stop sign when he turned onto High Street. Wicks failed to stop at stop signs at High and Stanton streets and at High and Parrish streets, the complaint says.

Wicks allegedly lost control of the Ford and crashed into a parked vehicle on High Street between Parrish and Blackman streets.

Police said they found a small plastic bag of marijuana in Wicks’ pant leg, a blunt in his pocket, and two sandwich bags containing packaged bags of marijuana in his underwear, the complaint says.

More marijuana and partially smoked joints were allegedly found inside the Ford.

Wicks was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, escape, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and several traffic offenses. He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $50,000 bail.
