Seminary dethrones Blair as national champion

BETHLEHEM – The most dominating high school record in the country has come to end.


Wyoming Seminary ended Blair Academy’s 33-year National Prep Wrestling Championships run on Saturday, cruising to the team title with 299.5 points to Blair’s 256.5.


The Blue Knights crowned two champions in Nicky Hall at 182 pounds and Jake Scanlan at 285, and also had five second-place finishers en route to the title.


The second-place finishers were Trent Olson (113), Will Verallis (126), Nick Reenan (152), Chris Weiler (160) and Matt Doggett at 220.


Doggett, a Shavertown resident, had an impressive run before falling in the finals as he pinned every opponent in the first period. There was a similar showing by Scanlan, who also pinned his way to the finals before winning via decision in the championship.


Hall won his second national title for the Blue Knights while Ty White finished in third at 170, as did Michael Rogers at 195.


Jake Savoca placed fourth at 145, John Busiello was fifth at 106, and Jimmy Overhiser (120) and Will Crisco (132) were each sixth.
