John E. Nixon, 83, of Wilkes-Barre Township, passed away Monday, November 29, 2010, surrounded by his family at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born January 19, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late John and Margaret Fick Nixon.
He was a 1944 graduate of St. Nicholas High School, Wilkes-Barre, and was last employed as a driver for Volunteers of America, until his retirement.
John served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal.
John enjoyed playing guitar, building model airplanes and trains. He was an avid horse racing fan and enjoyed smoking pipes and cigars.
He was preceded in death by granddaughter Jennifer Schoonover and sisters Marion Luce and Margaret McCort.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Julia George Nixon; four children, Pamela Schoonover, Kingston; John R. Nixon Sr., and his wife, Phyllis, Wilkes-Barre Township; Kathleen Flannery and David Nixon, both of Wilkes-Barre Township; brother Chase Nixon, Florida; eight grandchildren, Frank Schoonover and his wife, Ruthann; Brian Schoonover and his wife, Tamara; Michael Schoonover; Stephanie Flynn and her husband, John; John Nixon Jr. and his wife, Amy; Crystal Nixon; Kelly and Stephen Flannery; as well as eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, the Rev. John S. Terry will officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
