Council will let Moosic pick up recycling. Exeter currently handles its collection.

AVOCA – The Avoca Borough Council voted unanimously to allow the borough of Moosic’s Department of Public Works to collect its recyclables beginning in July. Exeter Borough currently collects Avoca’s recyclables that include plastic, paper, cardboard and glass for a monthly fee of $300. Moosic will pick up those same materials and will follow the same schedule but will not charge Avoca.

Moosic will require the Avoca Police Department to temporarily monitor the collection process to ensure that the proper items are being placed out for collection.

In other news, the council voted to accept the resignation of street commissioner Walter Volch.

Council President Joseph Satkowski praised the work that Volch had performed for the borough and wished him luck in his retirement. Council member Frank Marriggi called him “an asset to the town.”

Volch served as the street commissioner for 12 years and his retirement takes effect at the end of this month. He will be replaced by current street department employee Frank Patterson.

The council will hold a special meeting to hire a new street employee to replace Patterson on June 23.

Also at that special meeting, the council will solicit public comment and announce the beginning of a street project that was originally planned in 2007.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $335,000 with funding coming from state grants and will include repaving portions of seven streets.

The council also voted to accept a quote in the amount of $2,985 from Waste Management to collect up to three household items from borough residents displaying a valid garbage sticker.

The pickup is scheduled for September, but no specific date has been set.
