The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved an extension for the nuclear power plant near Berwick to complete the installation of a hardened containment wetwell vent at both Units 1 and 2.

PPL Susquehanna will now have until the end of a refueling outage in spring 2018 to complete the work at Unit 1 and until the end of a refueling outage in spring 2017 to complete the work at Unit 2 at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station.

The hardened wetwell vent would be used to remove combustible gases from the containment building before they could trigger an explosion after a severe accident. The installation of such vents is one of the NRC’s requirements for nuclear plants in America based on lessons learned from the meltdown disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan in 2011.
