PLAINS TWP. —A Tunkhannock man died from injuries he suffered when the vehicle he was in crashed into a drainage retention pond near East Mountain Boulevard on Monday.
The Luzerne County Coroner’s Office identified him as 81-year-old Robert Schultz.
Coroner Bill Lisman said Schultz died early Tuesday morning at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. His death was ruled an accident due to injuries suffered in a vehicle crash.
Schultz’s wife, Sally Schultz, 77, was in fair condition at Geisinger Wyoming Valley on Tuesday, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The vehicle driven by Sally Schultz crashed through a wooden fence on Baltimore Drive, down a stone wall and through a parking lot before crossing East Mountain Boulevard and down an embankment into the retention pond near Geisinger Orthopaedics at about 4:36 p.m. Monday.
Plains Township firefighters extricated the couple from the vehicle using backboards and basket litters, and transported them about one-half mile to the medical center.
