WILKES-BARRE - City police, wearing body armor, are telling residents of Hutson Street to go inside their homes for their own safety after gun fire erupted on the street earlier today.

City police and Luzerne County detectives are investigating the incident in the area of 62 Hutson Street. Approximately eight patrol officers and six detectives are on the scene.

Police investigating the shooting were attempting to make contact with the residents of a double-block house at 84-86 Hutson Street. There was no response to officers’ calls to open up the residence.

Neighbors were sitting on the front porch of a house on the corner of Hutson and Dana streets and heard five gunshots. One of the people said he hurried his niece into the house. They said they saw a gold Chevrolet Impala speed away from the scene and turn onto Dana Street and onto Park Avenue.

One man was taken by ambulance to Geisinger Wyoming Valley. His age and condition remain unknown.

The street has been closed to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
