DUNMORE – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced a modification of the construction plan for SR 3019 (Lonesome Road/Spring Street).

The residents of Moosic Borough recently expressed concern to PennDOT that due to the ongoing closure of a county-owned bridge on Main Street as well as the upcoming closure of SR 3019 (Lonesome Road/Spring Street), they were left with only one access route to their homes – a road that crosses a railroad track. With approximately fourteen trains per day crossing the track, the issue brought to PennDOT’s attention regarded access to the residents of Moosic in the event of an emergency when a train was on the tracks.

PennDOT initially conducted an anylsis of the county-owned bridge to determine if emergency vehicles could cross that bridge if necessary. Unfortunately, the results showed that this option was not feesible due to serious safety concerns with this bridge. However, PennDOT continued exploring various options until a solution was found.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will be bringing in a prefabricated, temporary bridge from Waymart and erecting it directly on top of the county-owned bridge on Main Street. By doing so, emergency responders will have an access route to the residents of Moosic if a train is stopped on the railroad tracks. While this route will only be utilized in an emergency, it will also allow the residents to avoid entrapment in the event of a train stoppage on the tracks.

After numerous meetings with PennDOT, State Representative Sid Kavulich described the modified plan as “a terrific example of cooperation that is happening between government agencies for the safety and welfare of the residents of the area. This could have been a situation where the bridge was simply closed, but this shows how different agencies can work together for the advantage and benefit of the public. This is how we should work as public servants”.

The prefabricated, temporary bridge is expected to be completely installed by the end of July. SR 3019 (Lonesome Road/Spring Street) will remain open until the temporary bridge is operational. The anticipated completion date for SR 3019 (Lonesome Road/Spring Street) is December 2014.
