WILKES-BARRE — A Hazleton woman will spend two years on probation after admitting to stealing more than $8,000 from a youth football organization for which she was treasurer.

Colleen E. Bresnock, 44, was sentenced Tuesday by Luzerne County Judge Fred Pierantoni, according to court documents. She pleaded guilty on May 27 to one felony theft count.

Bresnock admitted to police to taking the money to pay utility bills, police previously said.

She has made restitution in full, defense attorney Lewis Bott told The Times Leader on Wednesday.

According to a police affidavit, officials with the Hazleton Area Football League contacted Hazleton police on Nov. 11 regarding withdrawals from the group’s bank account made between Jan. 7 and Sept. 4, 2013, without authorization from the board.

Bank records provided to police showed 19 withdrawals, mostly from automated teller machines, ranging from $60 to $200 each, as well as two checks, one made out to Bresnock and the other to cash. The total withdrawn was $8,520.

Police questioned the two officials who were issued ATM cards for the account: league president Donald Johnson and Bresnock.

Johnson told police that league bills are paid by check or with the cards, but that he did not make the withdrawals and was not aware of anyone being given permission to make the withdrawals.

The next day, police questioned Bresnock, who admitted using most of the money to pay her utility bills so they would not get shut off. She also said she planned to pay the money back at the end of the season, according to the affidavit.

In addition to probation, Bresnock must perform 25 hours of community service and is forbidden from having any contact with the league’s members, participants or affiliates.
