Damaging hail and deadly cloud-to-ground lightning are forecast

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Luzerne County and southwestern Wyoming County until 5 p.m.

At 3:51 p.m., NWS Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter-size hail and destructive winds in excess of 70 mph. This storm was located 14 miles southwest of Rock Glen and moving northeast at 40 mph.

The severe thunderstorm will be near:

• Rock Glen by 4:10 p.m.

• Nescopeck by 4:16 p.m.

• East Berwick by 4:18 p.m.

• Beach Haven by 4:20 p.m.

• Shickshinny, Pond Hill and Huntington Mills by 4:28 p.m.

• Slocum by 4:30 p.m.

Members of the the public are asked, when they can do so safely, please report hail or damaging winds to the National Weather Service by calling toll free at 1-888-603-1402 or by email at bgm.stormreport@noaa.gov.

Precautionary/preparedness actions:

If you are in the path of this storm, seek shelter indoors and stay away from windows.

This is a dangerous storm. If you are in its path, prepare immediately for damaging winds, destructive hail and deadly cloud-to-ground lightning. People outside should move to a shelter, preferably inside a strong building but away from windows, the NWS advises.

This type of storm has a history of producing destructive winds and large damaging hail.
