WILKES-BARRE — A family of seven is displaced after a fire struck their home at Horton and Huston streets Thursday evening.
Fire crews were still working to extinguish the fire at 256 Horton St. at press deadline. The fire was reported to Luzerne County 911 at 8 p.m.
Neighbor Nicole Alba said the occupants of the home are Cynthia and Ronald Brown and their five sons, who range in age from 12 through adult.
“They’re amazing people. Cynthia helped me through thick and thin with my kids, even when I didn’t ask for it. They’re always keeping their kids involved (in the community),” Alba said. “It always happens to nice people who don’t deserve it.”
The Rev. Shawn Walker, a local pastor and Wilkes-Barre Area School Board member, was at the scene offering support to members of the family, whom he said he knows through their involvement in school and local sports.
Firefighters were concentrating their efforts on the rear and upper floors of the home. Flames could be seen at the eaves of the roof as well as shooting through the top of it.
Fire crews from Kingston were assisting city firefighters.
Additional details were not immediately available prior to press deadline.
