PITTSTON — The Greater Pittston Friendly Sons of St. Patrick have announced Thomas J. Reilly Sr. has been selected as this year’s Man of The Year and Dr. John F. Callahan has been chosen the Swingle Award recipient. Both men will be recognized at the organization’s 101st annual banquet, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 at The Woodlands Inn & Resort, Route 315, Plains.

This year’s banquet will also include a sports memorabilia silent auction conducted by Whip Fundraising featuring local college and professional items.

Cost is $75 per person and $50 for those under 21 years of age. Tickets are available from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. any Wednesday the Knights of Columbus in Pittston or by contacting any active member of the Greater Pittston Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

Thomas J. Reilly Sr.

Thomas J. Reilly is chairman of Reilly Associates, a multi-discipline engineering firm located in downtown Pittston. Under Reilly’s leadership, the firm has expanded to provide professional services throughout Pennsylvania and New York from its offices in the renovated Dime Bank Building.

Highlights of Reilly’s more than 50 years of civil engineering leadership include: In the1960s, stabilizing large dams for the Pennsylvania Gas and Water Company; in the 1970s, rebuilding streets and infrastructure throughout the Wyoming Valley after the devastation of Hurricane Agnes; in the 1980s and 90s, building a new 50 million-gallon-a-day wastewater treatment plant serving the Wyoming Valley, replacing highway bridges, and designing the first six-mile-long section of the new Casey Highway; in the 2000s, constructing miles of Flood Control in the Keyser Valley and Green Ridge sections of Scranton, designing infrastructure for the CenterPoint Commerce and Trade Park, improving water quality through the separation of storm and sanitary sewer lines in West Pittston and Pittston and designing new streetscape along Main Street in Pittston.

Reilly is a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish and its parish finance council and has served as volunteer project manager on many parish construction projects. He is a member of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Knights of Columbus. Reilly is former president of the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce, former president of the Pittston Kiwanis Club, and former trustee of Scranton Preparatory School.

Reilly was born in Pittston, a son of the late John J. Reilly and Agnes Milunas Reilly. He is a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and an honors graduate of Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Like his father, he is a Registered Professional Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor. He is also a Landscape Architect.

Reilly and his wife, the former Anne Noone, have resided in West Pittston for more than 50 years. They are the parents of four children: Eileen A. Reilly, an attorney with Burke, Vullo, Reilly, Roberts in Forty Fort; Thomas J. Reilly Jr., president of Reilly Associates; Karyn M. Reilly, director of marketing at Reilly Associates; and the late John F. Reilly, a graduate of Wyoming Area High School. They also have eight grandchildren.

Dr. John F. Callahan

Dr. John F. Callahan helped to establish the Care and Concern Clinic of St. John the Evangelist Chruch in Pittston, which aids those who are underinsured or do not have insurance. In addition to medical care, the clinic offers dental care, psychiatric counseling, children’s clothing and toys, and food baskets.

Born and raised in Pittston, Callahan is a son of the late John A. Callahan and Catherine McNulty. He attended Scranton Prep High School, The University of Scranton and the Pennsylvania College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Callahan operated a family practice in Pittston and also served as an emergency room physician at the Pittston Hospital and Geisinger Wyoming Valley.

He was president of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association for 1998-99. In 2000, he was named Physician of the Year by the organization. Callahan also served on the board of POMA for eight years. He has acquired several other awards and recognitions from varying organizations throughout his career.

Callahan was a school teacher prior to entering the medical field and continued to teach medical students throughout his career.

Callahan has seven children, 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
