NEWPORT TOWNSHIP COMMISSIONER: John Wilkes Jr., a Sheatown resident, is seeking another term on the Newport Township Board of Commissioners.
Wilkes, 65, is a current township commissioner and president of the Newport Township Municipal Authority.
Wilkes is retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection where he worked as a regional water quality manager and acting regional director. He is a 1959 graduate of Newport Township High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Penn State University in 1963. He is a licensed professional engineer.
Wilkes is married and has two daughters and two granddaughters.
NEWPORT TOWNSHIP COMMISSIONER: Michael Louis Roke announces his candidacy for Newport Township commissioner on the Democratic ticket.
Roke, 32, a political newcomer, is a resident of the township’s Alden section. He is a sergeant for the Nanticoke City Police Department, where he has been employed for 12 years.
He graduated from Greater Nanticoke Area High School in 1992 and received a criminal justice degree from Luzerne County Community College in 1994. He is also a 1995 graduate of Lackawanna College.
Roke is married and is expecting his first child in June.
NEWPORT TOWNSHIP COMMISSIONER: Paul L. Czapracki, a Democrat, is seeking re-election as Newport Township commissioner.
Czapracki, of the township’s Glen Lyon section, is chairman of the board, and chairman of the Newport Township Democrats.
Czapracki, 42, is a highway foreman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He is a 1982 graduate of Graduate Nanticoke Area High School and is unmarried.
