A defender has been named WVC’s top player only once in 17 seasons, it is believed.

Bishop Hoban’s Sarah Rogers has everything but history on her side.
The senior sweeper received an endorsement from her coach last week. Hoban coach Glenn Gray said Rogers may be the best player in Wyoming Valley Conference girls soccer.
“Sarah kind of directs the traffic back there,” Gray said. “She talks a lot and she is an all-state player, but in my opinion she might be the most valuable player in the league.”
The only problem is defenders rarely get the honor. In 17 years of WVC girls soccer, it is believed only once has the MVP been a defender.
Rogers, though, is turning in another excellent season. Hoban is 8-0 heading into today’s game with Dallas and has allowed just six goals. Rogers, an all-state player last year, has played a big part in the success.
While she doesn’t score, she has thwarted numerous scoring chances and quickly put the Argents on the counterattack. And she doesn’t panic when under pressure.
“She’s not going to score goals,” Gray said. “but she is so great at organizing and getting to balls most defenders wouldn’t. She’s a good passer and sends the ball along.
“It’s rare we get beat deep.”
Rogers won’t be the only MVP candidate on the field today. She and the defense need to keep a close eye on Dallas’ Kiley Williams, one of the most dangerous offensive players in the WVC.
