A mother was arrested and her 3-year-old boy reported missing in New Jersey was found when they were spotted leaving a shelter on Thursday, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Mary Carter, 25, was charged as a fugitive from justice and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility. An arrest warrant was issued for Carter on Thursday by Judge Darlene J. Pereksta in Mercer County, N.J.
According to a news release from the U.S. Marshals:
New Jersey authorities investigated an alleged abduction of the 3-year-old and determined that the non-custodial mother, Carter, had not returned her son to the custody of the boy’s father for 12 days after a one-day visit. Hamilton Township, N.J., police declared the boy missing on Wednesday.
The case was referred to the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Task Force. A lead in the case was forwarded to the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Deputy U.S. Marshals and city police identified Carter and the boy as they left a Wilkes-Barre shelter at about 8:15 Thursday night. Carter was arrested and the boy was turned over to county authorities for care and housing, pending coordination with New Jersey authorities for the return to the boy’s custodial father.
