Monroe M. Jurkowitz, Scranton, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at home.
He and his wife, the former Gloria Cimmet, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on August 13.
Born in Scranton, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Millie Mittelman Jurkowitz. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and went on to the University of Scranton, where he earned his degree in accounting.
During World War II, he served in U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations as an advanced surgical technician.
Prior to retirement, he was the owner of the Reynolds Brothers Office Supply and Stationary, located on North Washington Avenue, Scranton, for more than years. He was a member of Temple Israel, where he served as a former vice president and had taught in its Hebrew school for many years. He was a member of the Jewish Community Center, B’nai B’rith, the Jewish War Veterans, and he was also a member and past president of the Commercial Association of Scranton, as well as numerous other civic, religious and charitable organizations.
He was a beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and was a gentleman who was well-respected and admired throughout the community.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Estelle Finkelstein.
He is survived by a daughter, Deborah Jurkowitz and husband, Bruce Brotter, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; a son, Mark and wife, Linda, Silver Spring, Md.; four grandsons, Jake, Cody and Jesse Brotter, and Aaron Jurkowitz; a sister, Mitzi Popkin and husband, Paul, Huntington, N.Y.; a brother, Arthur Z. Jurkowitz, Scranton; as well as nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Temple Israel, Monroe Avenue and Gibson Street, Scranton, with services by Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn and Cantor Vladimir Aronzon. Interment will be in Temple Israel Cemetery, Dunmore. Shiva will be observed at the family residence, 249 Wheeler Ave., Scranton, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday through Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
