Pitch to encourage volunteerism appreciated

I want to commend The Times Leader for the recent editorial entitled “Make hours count for community.” This piece encouraged students working on service projects and civic volunteers to support locally focused organizations and community based efforts.

As the president of the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, a nonprofit organization that has been working exclusively in our region for almost 20 years to ease the burden of cancer, I want to reiterate that support from the community we serve is needed now more than ever.

Throughout the past several years, the Cancer Institute and virtually all local nonprofit organizations have faced a steady decrease in public and philanthropic funding. As we strive to maintain services, whether in the form of research seeking answers to cancer incidence and mortality in our region, connecting newly diagnosed individuals with vital resources or communicating life-saving information about cancer screening options, there are many ways for volunteers to help.

One opportunity specifically well-suited as a senior service project involves the Cancer Institute C.A.S.U.A.L. (Colon Cancer Awareness Saves Unlimited Adult Lives) Day. Interested students can work to promote life-saving awareness throughout the community, in an effort that addresses a specific local need. The program also allows students to be creative, bringing their own unique ideas to the project. For more information on this and other volunteer opportunities, please contact the Cancer Institute at 1-800-424-6724 or [email protected].
