JACKSON TWP. — A correctional officer was stabbed by an inmate serving a life sentence inside the State Correctional Institution at Dallas Thursday night.
Inmate Joel Perez, 40, allegedly slashed Correctional Officer Francis Petroski in the facial area, state police at Wyoming said.
Perez was sentenced in Lancaster County in 1996 to life in prison for a first-degree murder conviction.
According to a news release from Robin Lucas, SCI-Dallas spokesperson, the officer was stabbed at 7:35 p.m.
The inmate, whose name was not released by SCI-Dallas, was exiting a housing unit and while passing two officers sitting at a desk, used a homemade weapon to assault one of the officers, the news release says.
Three other officers in a corridor saw the inmate running from the housing unit and immediately apprehended him. The housing unit in which the stabbing took place is located across from the prison’s infirmary.
When the injured officer realized the situation was under control, he walked himself to the infirmary where he was provided medical care and later transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township.
“The entire incident, from start to finish, lasted only a few minutes,” stated Superintendent Larry Mahally in the news release. “Staff should be commended for their quick response to this isolated incident.”
The inmate is serving a life sentence and has been housed at SCI-Dallas since 1996. He was transferred to another state prison.
SCI-Dallas is on lock-down until further notice due to the stabbing. Inmate programs and visits have been cancelled and inmates will be fed in their cells.
State police are conducting an investigation as is the prison’s security staff and the Department of Corrections Security Division.
SCI-Dallas is a medium security facility for male inmates. As of March 31, the inmate population was 2,143, according to the DOC website.
