SWOYERSVILLE — Swoyersville mayor Vincent Dennis, 84, passed away Thursday night after a battle with cancer.

Dennis, who had overseen the activities of the borough for three decades was well-liked by council and residents alike.

Councilman Joseph Olejnick credited him not only as a public servant but as a generous contributor to the community.

“He was my little league coach,” said Olejnick, “truly a good person.”

Councilwoman Debbie Layaou also remembers Dennis as having a servant’s heart not only as it related to his official duties, but as a neighbor and friend.

“He was my handyman,” she said, “and he was also willing to help anyone in need.”

Layaou said Dennis was known for his help at community festivals, working at the potato pancake stand.

“I will never look at another potato pancake again without thinking about the mayor,” she said.

Councilman Christopher Concert said an anchor of the area had been lost with Dennis’ passing.

Concert said Dennis was the first person to welcome him after his election to council four years ago.

“Just a few weeks ago, I shared a drink and a few laughs with the mayor at the American Legion,” he said, “and although I did run against him, we always retained an attitude of respect with no grudges.”

“The fact the man was the longest sitting mayor in the county says more about him that I can possibly say,” Councilwoman Patti O’Donnell said. “I am going to miss him dearly.”

Dennis, a graduate of Swoyersville High School, held various volunteer positions in the community throughout his life.

The West Side Council of Government observed a moment of silence upon hearing of Dennis’ death Thursday.

Council members said it has not yet been decided who will replace Dennis, but a special meeting will be held in the near future.
