LARKSVILLE — Over 45 teachers, coaches and personnel were hired or had their contracts renewed by the Wyoming Valley West School Board at Wednesday night’s meeting.

Frank Tribendis will remain coach for the district’s swimming and water polo teams, and Pat Keating will also stay as the varsity football coach.

As for teaching positions, two new music teachers were hired for the district, as well as four elementary and special education teachers. The English and physical education departments both hired two more teachers, with the art and Spanish departments each gaining one.

Senior Taylor Thoryk will be honored with a 2015 UNICEF award at the Woodlands Thursday. Thoryk was diagnosed with Leukemia in the fall of 2013. She played soccer for the high school girls team and is an honor roll student. After finding out her diagnosis, friends and family members quickly arranged various fundraisers to help pay for medical bills and other obstacles facing her family.

She will receive a $1,000 and trophy at the event.

Senior student representative Julie Green was presented with a book that she personally chose to be added to the school’s library. Green’s chosen book was “Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead.”

A motion was approved to re-appoint Aramark as the district’s food service contractor for the 2015-16 school year, along with a .10 cent increase in school lunch prices. Elementary school lunches will cost $2.15, middle and high school lunches $2.40.

Bids were approved and awarded to various companies for janitorial, technological and interscholastic sports supplies.

School board members approved a Vermont Ski Trip for the Spartan Ski & Board Club. Club members will visit Jay Peak in Vermont for two days during March of 2016.

Student representatives announced the district’s upcoming schedule during the meeting.

• The junior/senior prom will be held May 8.

• ArtiGras and the high school chorus concert will take place May 21.

• An Act 80 day is scheduled for May 22.

• The high school band concert will be on May 31.

• The senior trip to Great Adventure will be on June 5.

• Graduation practice will be June 10 with graduation the following day at 6 p.m.
