WYOMING — Dr. Michael Lewis, a member of the art history faculty of Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts will serve as the keynote speaker at the upcoming commemoration of the 237th anniversary of the Battle and Massacre of Wyoming, to be held on July 4, at 10 a.m. at the Wyoming Monument National Historic Site, Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming.

Lewis, a native of Wyoming Valley, serves as the Faison-Pierson-Stoddard Professor of art history at Williams College. He is a graduate of Haverford College and received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.

An expert in American architecture, with particular knowledge of the architecture of Wyoming Valley, he has authored numerous books on American architects and design. Prior to joining the Williams College faculty, he taught at Bryn Mawr College; McGill University, Montreal; and the University of Natal in South Africa.

Chairman of the annual observance and master of ceremonies for the event will be State Representative Aaron Kaufer. Rev. J. Duane Gavitt, pastor of St. Mary’s Church of the Immaculate Conception in Wilkes-Barre, will serve as the chaplain.

The Wyoming Valley Band will begin their concert at 10 a.m.

The event is open to the public, free of charge, and tent covered seating is available in case of rain.

The annual event was begun in 1878 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Wyoming, the most significant Revolutionary battle fought in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The event is sponsored by the Wyoming Commemorative Association.
