Luzerne Foundation Annual Meeting

* Wednesday, May 15, at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts

* Reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the meeting at 6 p.m.

WILKES-BARRE — The Sisters of Mercy will receive the Mary Bevevino Community Service Award May 15 at the annual meeting of the Luzerne Foundation.

“The Sisters are truly amazing women,” Charles Barber, president and CEO of The Luzerne Foundation, said. “They do so many things in our community; probably more than we know. It is their calling, and it is a blessing for all of us.”

Barber said the Sisters of Mercy has grown from its humble beginnings in Hazleton in 1874 and Wilkes-Barre in 1875. The members of the order have spent their lives teaching and ministering in hospitals and parishes, touching the lives of thousands of people for several generations.

Barber said many Pennsylvania miners owe their education and growth to the Sisters of Mercy.

“In fact, generations later, their families live, work and thrive in the very areas settled by their forefathers with the dedicated help of the Sisters of Mercy,” he said.

Today in Luzerne County, the Sisters of Mercy sponsor Misericordia University in Dallas Township and a number of non-traditional educational programs, including the McGlynn Center in Wilkes-Barre, a licensed skilled nursing and personal care facility at Mercy Center in Dallas, a shelter/housing system for homeless women and children at Catherine McAuley Center in Plymouth and Wilkes-Barre, counseling/spiritual direction services at Mercy Consultation Center in Dallas and outreach services to the elderly and the underserved population.

“The Mary Bevevino Community Service Award is the highest award the foundation offers and it is named in memory of the wife of our original founding board member, Frank Bevevino,” Barber said. “Our executive committee recognized and appreciated the wide,wide variety of service the sisters do every year throughout the region. We thought it was time we recognize their efforts. and hope they continue to do so.”

Barber said the Luzerne Foundation is the “center for philanthropy” in Luzerne County.

“We look forward to this event every year,” noted Phil Decker, Chair of The Luzerne Foundation Board of Directors. “It is a whole day of seminars and training that we provide free to nonprofits and professional advisers in our community, and then we celebrate in the evening with our Annual Meeting and the presentation of the Community Service Award.”

The Mary Bevevino Community Service Award was established in 2000 and honors a Luzerne County resident who has made a significant, positive impact in the area. It is the foundation’s highest tribute reflecting the unwavering dedication, commitment and spirit of its namesake.

Several free seminars are planned during the day prior to the annual meeting. This year the featured speaker at each of three sessions is Brian M. Sagrestano, JD, CFRE, president and CEO of Gift Planning Development LLC. The Luzerne Foundation, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and The Nonprofit & Community Assistance Center (NCAC) sponsor the first two sessions. All are free, but reservations are required.

Non-profits Professional Seminars:

* 11 a.m. “The Art of Listening”

* 12:45 p.m. “Planned Giving — Collaboration with Professional Advisers”

Both seminars will be held at The Woodlands Inn and lunch is provided.

Professional Advisers Seminar

* 3 p.m. The final educational session focuses on “Meeting Your Clients’ Personal Planning Goals” and “Charitable Family Wealth Planning Techniques.” It is sponsored by The Luzerne Foundation, The Wilkes-Barre Law & Library Association and the Northeast Chapter of the PICPA. Professional advisor attendees can earn 2 CLE or 2 CPE (tax) continuing education credits.Contact the foundation at 714-1570 for continuing education credit costs. This session will be held at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts.
