The Crestwood Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team has earned an invitation to compete in the 34th Odyssey of the Mind World Finals to be held at Michigan State University on May 22 through 25.

The team recently won the state competition held at Pocono Mountain East High School in Monroe County with its presentation titled “ARTchitecture: The Musical,” which features choreographed performance art, song and dance, and problem solving.

The Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational competition program, the mission of which is to provide creative, problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.

This is the sixth year the Crestwood team has competed in the Odyssey of the Mind competition. Members will be returning to the international finals as three-time defending state champions.

Teams from throughout the United States and 25 foreign countries will participate in this year’s event.

“Participating in the Odyssey has given me the opportunity to make a whole lot of new friends,” said Crestwood team member Sarah Klush. “I now have friends from throughout the world that I talk to every day.”

According to the Odyssey of the Mind website, the program fosters “creative thinking through open-ended problems that can be applied to real-life situations.”

“It’s a chance to express yourself without the fear of being made fun of,” said Klush, an eighth-grade honors student at Crestwood.

The team is holding a number of “Michigan or BUST” events to help defray the cost of the trip to East Lansing, including a Happy Hour on May 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dorrance Inn, and a basket of cheer raffle on May 18.
