HAZLE TWP. — A West Hazleton man was killed after his car hydroplaned and crashed head-on into another vehicle on state Route 924 today.
State police in Hazleton said Carlos Taveras-Martes, 35, was driving west on Route 924 at about 4:50 p.m. when his 1994 Honda Accord began to hydroplane and he lost control.
The Accord crossed the center turn lane and into the eastbound lanes where it collided head-on with a 2010 Volkswagen CC Sport being driven east by Christopher Jones, 43, of the Drums section of Butler Township.
The vehicles came to rest in the right eastbound lane near Quad Graphics.
Both drivers were transported to Hazleton General Hospital, where Taveras-Martes, who was not wearing a seat belt, succumbed to his injuries, police said.
Jones, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered moderate injuries.
