WEST WYOMING — Although council couldn’t hold its regular meeting Monday due to lack of quorum, a group of citizens had plenty to say.

In order for there to be a quorum, five out of the seven council persons must be present. Council members Eileen Cipriani, Walter Stevens and Geno Leoni were absent. Councilman Gary Stavish said a special meeting, which will be advertised in the near future, will be held this month to pay bills, approve the treasurer’s report and place two ordinances on the table.

The group said it planned to comment about Monday’s announcement by UGI Penn Natural Gas to begin the construction of a gate station in the borough.

Exeter resident Nancy Dolan, of Luzerne County for Clean Air, said she worries that UGI’s decision to build the gate station, without the originally proposed buildings to accompany it, could set a precedent for other natural gas companies to ask for exceptions to zoning laws by partnering with public utilities.

“Why do we need rulings and hearings from the (Public Utility Commission) if these corporations can partner with a utility and run roughshod through the law?” she said.

Kingston Township resident Maria Dubiel said she lives along the direct route to the gate station on Bunker Hill. She recently received a letter, accompanied by a color brochure and refrigerator magnet from Williams Partners, the owners of the Transco pipeline, with instructions on what to do in the event of a natural gas emergency.

Dubiel said she’s worried not only about the health risks but also about the drop in property values. She said she’s also concerned that UGI’s move will open the doors for other such projects or even a compressor station.

“This is a high-pressure delivery station into the Transco line, and it’s not the job of a public utility,” she said.
