Jury convicts man in stabbing

WILKES-BARRE - A Luzerne County jury on Wednesday found Armoni Johnson, 26, guilty in the stabbing of another man in Wright Township two years ago.


Township police said Johnson forced his way inside an apartment on Charter Driver and stabbed Justin Barna, 32, three times on Aug. 7, 2011.


Barna survived stab wounds to his chest, abdomen and back.


Assistant District Attorney Mamie Phillips told jurors that Johnson blamed Barna for stealing heroin and was upset Barna would not allow him to keep heroin in the apartment on Charter Drive.


Johnson’s attorney, Allyson Kacmarski, said police did not thoroughly investigate, saying Barna’s cell phone records were never reviewed and no fingerprints were found on a knife, which was located in a neighbor’s apartment.


Johnson was convicted on two counts of aggravated assault. The jury acquitted him on a burglary charge.


A co-defendant in the cast, Terrill Mattox, is scheduled to appear in court on July 23 on charges of aggravated assault and burglary.


Judge Fred Pierantoni III said Johnson will be sentenced Sept. 30.
