UPDATED AT 1:24 p.m.:

Both lanes of I-81 southbound have reopened after a school bus versus tractor trailer crash with injuries caused officials to close it before 11 a.m. Local roadways are heavilly clogged with previously rerouted traffic.

UPDATED AT 12:33 p.m.:

HAZLE TWP. — The chief executive officer of an eastern Pennsylvania YMCA told the Associated Press that about 25 children suffered only minor injuries when their bus was rear-ended by a tractor trailer on Interstate 81.

Hazleton YMCA CEO Sue Farley said that the children were being treated at Hazleton General Hospital. She says an adult staffer was also hurt and flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital System as a precaution, but she’s expected to be “fine.”

The crash occurred about 10:15 a.m. Friday, when the truck reportedly hit the bus from behind in the southbound lanes of the highway near Exit 141.

The children on the bus were on a day trip as part of a summer program run by the Hazleton YMCA. A second bus carrying more children wasn’t involved in the crash.

UPDATED AT 11:55 a.m.:

HAZLE TWP. — An accident this morning involving a school bus and a tractor trailer that’s shut down I-81 southbound in the McAdoo area resulted in one serious and multiple minor injuries, according to emergency officials on scene.

The youth in a Martini School Bus Co. bus were treated for injuries and some were taken away from the scene near mile marker 139.5 in ambulances to Hazleton General Hospital. One was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital System in Allentown. The bus company is based in Drums and there was no word where the children on the bus were headed to or from, though WBRE-TV reported that the students were Hazleton YMCA campers.

Emergency responders from multiple ambulance and fire companies, and a medical helicopter, were called for aid.

Motorists trying to get around the interstate are causing traffic backups on Route 309 and other area roadways.

As more information becomes available, this story will be updated.
