Back in the office from my Labor Day off just a few minutes and a reader has already called me an idiot.
My trangression that rated such a harsh response, picking Temple to defeat Notre Dame.
Hey, the Owls were right in there. OK, so they pretty much got clobbered, but I don’t think that makes me an idiot.
Does it? Well at least I know one person takes the time to follow my predictions.
And speaking of predictions, for those of you interested in my competition with Sheena Delazio, it was not a good week for me. Sheena went 12-3, while my Notre Dame pick cost me as I clocked in at only 10-5.
SCHOOL’S OUT: The kids in Wyoming Area School District are enjoying an extra long weekend as their teachers shut down the district with a strike. Staff writer Mark Guydish will have all the details.
HE’S BACK: The prodigal Luzerne County councilman has returned.
That’s right. Stephen A. Urban is alive and well. Urban, who’s absence caused his wife to contact authorities last month, called the newsroom just a few minutes ago. Staff writer Jen Learn-Andes confirmed that it was Urban on her voicemail.
Conspiracy theorist worldwide can move on to another topic now.
POWER IS BACK ON: Staff writer Roger DuPuis tells us that power has been restored to Wilkes-Barre and Plains after a problem at a substation plunged the area into the dark.
All right, it wasn’t really dark because the outage happened between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., but still some 6,000 residents were unable to watch American Dad on TBS.
Fortunately, I don’t live in the effected area, so my afternoon TV was not interrupted.
BAD NEWS FOR PSU: Sports writer Derek Levarse tells us that talented tight end Matt Lehman is out for the season.
Lehman was injured in Penn State’s 23-17 victory over Syracuse on Saturday.
Derek will have a complete report from coach Bill O’Brien’s weekly press conference in Wednesday’s edition of The Times Leader.
CAMPUS NEWS: The Weekender answers every question any area college student could possibly have about collegiate life in the Wyoming Valley. Well, maybe not every question, but Weekender staff writer and sometimes Times Leader copy editor Sara Pokorny has many of the answered in this week’s cover story.
Don’t forget to pick the Weekender up tomorrow for Sara’s story. (Or at least to check out the Model of the Week.)
That’s it for today. I have to ease into these afternoon updates after a long weekend.
But as always if you have a comment, complaint or question, call me at 570-829-7164 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Have a good night.
