RICE TWP. — The supervisors voted 2-1 Tuesday to vacate portions of the unpaved sections of Heslop Road.

Supervisors Miller Stella Jr. and George Venesky voted to approve the ordinance, while Supervisor Marcia Thomas voted no.

The ordinance replaces the previously advertised one, which stated that the township would vacate part of unpaved Heslop Road, limiting the portion to the game lands.

Several members of the community voiced opposition to the ordinance, stating that the land has been intact for decades and saying the change would cause unnecessary inconvenience.

Venesky said he wants “no parts of the road open to the public.” He said the state has taken the road off of its liquid fuels-eligible list because of the unsafe conditions that exist in its area.

Stella said the road would need major reconstruction, noting it was “an accident waiting to happen.”

The supervisors also tabled a motion to place a security light and gate across the road at the end of the paved portion of Heslop Road.
