WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Township Council held a special meeting immediately before its regular work session Monday night at which police officer Shawn Whitebread was terminated.

Township officials would not discuss the reason for termination, but Solicitor Bruce Phillips speculated that information will soon be made public as the arbitration process begins.

A Berwick native and current Plains Township resident, Whitebread served as a full-time officer for the township since 2004, and as a part-time officer for several years prior.

Internet and phone book searches for contact information for Whitebread could not yield any results.

In the work session after the special the meeting, the council gave tacit support for the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority’s plans to apply for state gaming funds to expand the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Although the council informally agreed to sponsor the grant application, the matter will likely come before the council again at the November or December regular meeting.

Mayor Karl Kuren also announced the first reading of the 2014 budget will be Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
